Floods is imminent (Just looked back at that and realized I wrote that floods is imminent! Must not blog without coffee in my bloodstream. Of course, I mean't that flooding is imminent...)in Western Washington rivers and streams due to a storm that began pounding the region last night and won't let up until Friday(!), according to forecasters. I'm due to head out to Spring Valley this afternoon, so I'll get a close up look and report back. Hopefully, with pictures.
Huge Marine Reserve Area Announced
In the waning days of his Administration, President Bush made a large positive contribution to the environment by preserving a large tract of the Pacific Ocean, rendering it off-limits to fishing, bottom trawling and other activities that threaten the marine ecosystem. I haven't talked to him, but I'm guessing that my friend Elliott Norse of the Marine Conservation Biology Institute had something to do with this.
Federal Way - One of the Best
Tip of the Hylebos cap to the FW Chamber of Commerce. I was just reading the latest newsletter and learned that Federal Way was named a runner-up, along with Shoreline, to Bellevue as one of the Best Places to Raise Your Kids by BusinessWeek Magazine. The publication used a combination of affordability, median income, crime rates, and schools to rank cities. I don't know if they looked at open space as a factor. Those of us working on Hylebos conservation have known for a long time about Federal Way's qualities as a place for families, the Hylebos being a big part of the quality of life here.
