Patiently we wait for the salmon to arrive at Brooklake on the west branch of Hylebos Creek. Teri Lenfest and I (Adele Freeland ) have monitored this site together for several years. The flows in the creek are just right for fish passage. Unlike in past years when Brooklake water levels have been below normal and the lake was mostly mud. This year the water in the lake is quite high and we predict very high flows down Hylebos Creek following any storm.
Teri and I are not the only ones waiting for the salmon to arrive. Last week we observed the Great Blue Heron and Green Heron. Both have resumed their posts near the stream. A male River Otter cruised down the creek within inches of Teri's observation post. Two coyotes were hunting in the fields of the Blueberry farm..
Down at our second monitoring site, the 4th Street Bridge in Fife we have seen a few salmon, but have had breif glimpses of them jumping, or swiming just up or downstream from the bridge. Howerve we relish being out of doors on a crisp Fall morning to enjoy the sights and sounds of the surrounding area.
